Basketball court construction involves several steps, with variations depending on whether the court is for indoor or outdoor use and the desired level of play (professional, high school, recreational).
Site Preparation (Outdoor Courts Only)
- Excavation: Excavate the area to the desired depth for base materials and drainage.
- Subbase: Install a compacted gravel or crushed rock base to provide stability and drainage.
- Drainage System: Implement a drainage system to prevent water pooling on the court's surface.
Court Surface Construction
Indoor Courts:
- Subflooring: Install subflooring with a moisture barrier to prevent moisture from affecting the wood floor.
- Wood Floorboards: Install wooden floorboards (usually maple) with proper spacing for expansion and contraction. Sand and finish the wood floor.
Outdoor Courts:
- Concrete/Asphalt Poured Courts: Pour concrete or asphalt base, ensuring proper leveling and slope for drainage. Let it cure completely.
- Modular Courts: Lay interlocking rubber tiles or pre-fabricated court panels according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Acrylic Surfacing: Apply an acrylic surfacing material specifically designed for outdoor basketball courts.
Painting and Markings
- Apply official paint colors for the court surface and markings according to basketball court specifications. Paint the free throw lane, three-point line, key area, and half-court line.
